This fake product is useless, but even threatened the spirit of his drinker. Because of that the Department of the Industry Indonesia will immediately carry out the joint operation by involving the sectoral passage.
“His perpetrators the company’s big mafia that was located in border between Thailand-Malaysia.”
Fact is that written not made by Malaysia but Indonesia, said Chairman of Union of the Businessman the Herbal Tonic and Tradisional Medicine (GP Jamu Indonesia) Charles Saerang when have meeting with Industry Minister, Fahmi Idris in his office of Street Gatot Subroto, Jakarta, on Thursday (18/5/2006)

According to him, the sellers definitely will know the characteristics of this false herbal tonic, but for the lay buyer will not know it because equally precisely with the original herbal tonic and usually its price is cheaper 10 percent. Most of the fake jamu are diet, bones flu, vein acid, breathless and hypertension tonic. The Indonesian herbal tonic industries incurred a loss IDR 15 billion (USD 1,5 million) permonth.

Yes, you can NOT the term jamu gendong in malaysia, because jamu gendong is Javanese term. Malaysia won’t have that term and of course won’t have it in their culture.

What is gendong ?
Gendong is to carry on the back. Want to imagine how? Here is, click this link and see the picture.

As you can see in the picture, all of the jamu is put in the big bottle and served in a glass. when someone want to buy it, the “gendong”-ed jamu will be putted down in the ground, and then seller will offer you what kind of jamu you want to drink. She will pick a bottle and a glass and serve you with a glass full of jamu. Most of jamu seller is women or sometimes girls, why? It’s become a tradition when women are the king of the kitchen and prepare food for family including jamu. So, the mistery of jamu is in the hand of woman, that’s why most of the seller is women.

Is it costly ?
In Indonesia (not in malaysia), it much more cheaper than mineral water in the same volume. Yes, its so cheap, that’s why sometimes people argue on its quality.
But dont worry, most modern jamu industries already equipped with ultra modern machines and hygiene raw of material.

Jamu will always related to Java culture and traditions, but I found an interesting articles from internet. Jamu seller in Seminyak Bali, that’s the article title quite informative writes, the whole article can be found here

Jamu is the ancient Indonesian set of cure-alls, that local people drink to fix ills or give them a boost. Today on Jl. Seminyak, I said hello to a lady selling jamu, made at home and carried in plastic water bottles. When the jamu seller shows up in the morning, the water she uses is warm, but as the day goes on, its cold water. The jamu is served in a glass, which costs 500rp. You can ask for the ‘general jamu’ which is ready mixed, in the other bottles she carries, or ask for a specific jamu. Remedies for back ache, head ache, impotence etc are all possible, the jamu seller mixing the ingredients from packets. You can buy packets of jamu in local shops, to put into a glass of water. Some of the stuff I have sampled, was a selection of powdered peppers and spice, filing a quarter of the glass. The stuff tasted peppery, and left my with the runs. So for constipation I can recommend it. Not sure what else for though. Asian cultures are full of ‘local cures’.

In the Philippines they have a things called balut, which is a fertilized, unhatched duck’s egg. ‘Tastes like heaven and looks like hell’, is what people have told me. Filipino friends have told me, they have to turn out the lights in order to eat a balut, the sight is not pleasant. Apart from the taste, men have told me they eat one after sexual activity (I’m sure a Mexican would say the same of a shot of tequila).

The name of ‘Jamu‘
Javanese calls Jamu for herbal remedies, without chemist material as additive. Jamu has traditional connotation, because Jamu is ancient tradition, before modern pharmacology comes in Indonesia. Some formulas have a hundred years old and are used until now.

‘Dukun’ or ‘tabib’, a traditional doctor has been introducing this mention in ancient era. From them, drinking Jamu tradition has been popular in common people. And now, almost 80% of Indonesian people ever consume Jamu. For Indonesian people, Jamu is very popular as milk popularity for western.

The visible proof is the use of traditional herbal medicine of various type of ‘medical plants’, either from the leaves, the fruits, the roots, the flowers or the barks, etc.

These herbal medicine had been used since the ancient time up to now, it is largely consumed by people of different level; lower, middle and upper, in the villages and in the big cities.

The study of jamu had been conducted by Rumphius, a botanist as early as the year 1775 AD by publishing a book ‘Herbaria Amboinesis’. A scientific research for jamu by the research center of herbal medicine in Bogor Botanical Garden, resulting a publication of a book ‘Medical Book for Children and Adults’, composed by E. Van Bent.

The first seminar about jamu has been held in Solo in 1940, followed by a Formation of Indonesia’s Jamu Committee in 1944. In the 1966, a seminar on jamu was held again. In 1981, a book by title of ‘The use of Medical Plants’ was established to support the jamu industry in the country.

The method of using the jamu remains the same as the ancestors did. Some are consumed by drinking it and some are for outside application.

TRADITION:
Bali Spice®, Boreh as it is referred to in the Balinese language, is a time honored remedy used in villages for aching muscles and headaches. Traditionally used by rice farmers to warm their extremities and release “wind” from the body. Upon completion of this treatment, we suggest a simple tea of fresh ginger root steeped in hot water, with a touch of honey.
